Beer Reviews

Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to prosper.

The purpose of this section of the site is to talk about non-mass-market beers and to give you an idea about how they taste, how good they are, and whether they are worth spending the money to buy or the time to drink.

A friend recently asked, “Why do you waste your time talking about beer?” It’s simple: the world has some marvelous beers, brews that are as fine and memorable as fine and memorable wines.

This will be a slow process. I don’t (and can’t) drink all that much, so my personal reviews will come a few at a time. I hope that some friends and correspondents of discernment and good judgment will weigh in with their personal reviews. When they send them I will publish them (retaining and exercising editorial rights, of course).

Seasonal beers (such as Winter and Christmas beers) will often be featured for a time on the home page and in our blog, Overtones. After a decent interval, those reviews will be placed in pages connected to this one (which recently happened with the 2005-6 Christmas and Winter beers).

A note on qualifications: I am not an expert on beer but I do know more about it than most people do. I’ve written for publication about beer and have run many specialized beer tastings (Belgian beers, seasonal brews, regional microbrews among the many).

Where possible, I will give links to additional information (brewery web sites, beer terminology sites, other reviewer sites, articles, books) and will try to include information on where the beers are available. Over time I will also compile on a separate page a beer bibliography - books and articles as I find them.
